Fellowships
Are you a mid-career researcher with an outstanding record and an ambitious research plan?
The IDRM runs a yearly Transition Fellowship programme to support and develop an outstanding researcher at an intermediate/career development stage.

We are a dynamic and collaborative research Institute, with 15-20 research groups and 240 research staff investigating how understanding normal development can inform on strategies to regenerate diseased or injured tissues. Our interests span across three research themes: cardiovascular science, neuroscience and immunology, capturing three of the major organ systems targeted by non-communicable diseases.
The fellowship can be carried out in either one of the three research themes and we welcome clinicians and basic scientists to apply.
We are specifically looking for researchers seeking mentoring and sponsorship to apply for external career development fellowships (e.g., Wellcome Trust’s Career Development, MRC’s Career Development, BHF’s Intermediate Basic Science Research, UKRI Future Leaders, EPSRC Established Career). Applications for external fellowship funding will need to be submitted at 18 months into the post. Researchers who succeed in securing an external fellowship will be invited to establish their independent group at the Institute, benefiting from comprehensive mentorship, career development training and opportunities to recruit Oxford undergraduate and postgraduate students.
The Transition Fellow upon appointment will receive a £200k funding envelope, awarded for a two-year duration. This budget can be spent as the Transition Fellow sees fit, covering costs for a research assistant (where justified) along with appropriate consumables and travel costs for conference attendance/collaboration placements. The Fellow’s own salary is not part of this funding envelope.
Fellows will have access to state-of-the-art core facilities and support services, and the stimulating environment of the Old Road Campus with neighbouring partner research Institutes: Wellcome Centre of Human Genetics, Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology, Big Data and the Target Discovery Institute and occupants of the BioEscalator, as well as the wider University of Oxford in general.
Successful applicants will have:
- A minimum of 3 years post-doctoral experience
- Distinctive research achievements
- A cutting-edge research plan for the next 5 years
The post holders will need to be able to work independently as well as be open to active collaboration with multi-disciplinary partners. We look for individuals who have emerging independence in a field that will add value to IDRM’s mission and will use these awards to build a cadre of externally funded and highly competitive young group leaders.
Students
The Institute of Developmental & Regenerative Medicine offers a unique environment for training the next generation of researchers in developmental biology and regeneration. The IDRM has access to broad multidisciplinary expertise and state-of-the-art facilities to accelerate learning and research progression and we pride ourselves on our supervision and mentorship to support our trainees. We capitalize on collaborations with some of the University’s top research Institutes on the Old Road Campus and with the wider University to ensure access to the full plethora of research platforms and disciplines, including computational biology, data science, machine learning and mathematical modelling. Our students are encouraged to form their own collaborative, inter-disciplinary networks and benefit from an in-house graduate society, access to programmes run through parent departments as well as the significant added value from being a member of a collegiate University.
